The photographer I chose is Michael Kenna. I like his work due to the subject matter he chooses as well as his use of large depth of field. His use of long shutter speeds allows him to achieve this effect. The expansive space within individual photos often appears misty and slightly out of focus, yet individual subject matter within the photos is sharp. His use of a long shutter speed allows for the fuzzy effect, but by balancing the shutter with a smaller aperture, he is still able to present minute details of his subject matter. The other thing that I found interesting about his work was the fact that his pictures found balance by having areas of deep blacks balanced out with very light greys. It gives the pictures a very dramatic and ghostlike presence without introducing blur into the equation, and I found that visually stunning. When he does choose to add effects to his photos by moving his camera with the shutter open or creating an iris effect, the blacks, whites and greys are enhanced. I also was drawn to the way he chose his subject matter. He captures architecture as well as nature, which is a combination I tried to have within my portfolio as well. A lot of his pictures also have very sharp strong lines within them, which was a feature that appeared in many of my photos as well.
